SUMMER INSTITUTE
IN DISASTER RELIEF AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE

The Consortium of Humanitarian Service and Education will conduct a two-week Summer Institute at Krivolak Military Training Grounds, Macedonia, May 17 to June 1, 2009. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn first-hand how to conduct safe and effective disaster relief operations.

SVETLINA 09

The cornerstone of the Summer Institute is an intensive field-based simulation, named SVETLINA, which recreates the conditions and challenges humanitarian operators encounter in the real world.

For a third year, SVETLINA will bring together American and European students working in teams to plan, prepare and conduct a humanitarian relief operation in a simulated post-conflict environment. Students will respond to scenarios involving mass casualty incidents, humanitarian negotiations, search and rescue, mine and IED awareness, IDP management, convoy operations, mission safety, security, etc.

The goal of this program is to help students understand the origins of humanitarian crises, develop cross-cultural competencies, and to practice planning, executing and evaluating humanitarian relief operations in disasters and complex emergencies.

Past participants have included students in emergency management, humanitarian assistance, defense studies, post-conflict reconstruction, peace-building, psychology, criminal justice, geography and political science.

REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have basic first aid skills, complete a set of required readings on humanitarian operations (see "Resources"), and have passed the United States FEMA online course IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System.

A lab fee of $2000.00 USD is required to pay for in-country supplies, food, accomodations and transportation between Skopje and Krivolak. The fee is subject to change depending on currency rates.
