SUMMER INSTITUTE IN DISASTER RELIEF AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE
For two weeks in May, 2007, the Summer Institute brought together fifteen American and fifteen Macedonian students along with staff and faculty to learn how to be both safe and effective in
conducting humanitarian field operations.
This program was held at the Krivolak
Military Training Center in the Republic of Macedonia.
SVETLINA 07
The two-week Institute cullminated in a four-day "final exam" or field exerecise, named
SVETLINA 07, which tested
participant skills and expertise in a simulated
complex emergency.
Topics included needs assessment, planning and organization, first aid, landmine and UXO awareness, radio communications, earthquake rescue, flood rescue, hazmat rescue, humanitarian security and humanitarian negotiation.
