Since 2001 the ATLANTIC HOPE field training exercises have provided emergency management and humanitarian operations students opportunities to apply the skills and concepts they have learned in the classroom in simulated disaster environments.
The 2007 exercise was held over a three day period in March. Students and faculty from Northwest Missouri State University arrived in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Friday for a series of operations briefings before deploying to the fictional country of "Atlantica" with their colleagues from Indian River State College (IRSC). The exercise was also attended by observers from the United States Institute of Peace and the Washington delegation of International Committee of the Red Cross.
As in previous years, ATLANTIC HOPE 07 included humanitarian negotiations, food aid, convoy operations, mass casualty incidents, security incidents, search and rescue, and field medical operations. For the first time the 2007 exercise also included a student-run "detainee visit" simulation using role-players and prison facilities at the IRSC Police Academy.
These Florida-based events give students an opportunity to prepare for the much longer and more difficult SVETLINA exercises held overseas in Macedonia.
