Since 2001 the ATLANTIC HOPE Field Training Exercises have provided emergency management and humanitarian assistance students opportunities to practice the skills they have learned in the classroom. This is done by creating mock disaster situations to allow "hands-on" practice of planning and execution of emergency relief missions.
ATLANTIC HOPE 07 and 08
Field Training Exercises ATLANTIC HOPE 07 and ATLANTIC HOPE 08 were conducted in March, 2007 and 2008, respectively, on the campus of Indian River State College, Fort Pierce, FL. Students and faculty from Northwest Missouri State University joined their colleagues from Indian River State College for a series of operations briefings before deploying to the fictional country of "Atlantica". The exercises were also attended by observers from the United States Institute of Peace and the Washington delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
As in previous years, the exercises included humanitarian negotiations, food aid, convoy operations, mass casualty incidents, security incidents, SAR, and field medical situations. In 2007, a "detainee visit" using role-players and prison facilities at the Indian River State College Police Academy was added to the curriculum.
These Florida-based events also give students an opportunity to prepare for the longer and more difficult SVETLINA exercises held in Macedonia (FYROM) in May.
